Text Selection and Best Practices
UCDSB recognizes that classroom teachers in collaboration with school administration are best positioned to identify learning materials that are age-appropriate, accessible, relevant, meaningful, and engaging for students. Classroom teachers are expected to collaborate with school Principals to identify the best possible learning materials for students.
School leaders are encouraged to support teachers with best practices for text selection:
• Read the whole text before introducing content to students.
• Review student reading data to determine whether students can access the text.
• Connect with colleagues that have used texts with students.
• Collaborate with school Principal to support best practices and book purchases.
In an effort to support school leaders and teachers with best practices, the following chart has been shared to consider as part of the text selection process.
Each of the above-mentioned novels are listed separately on the menu bar and include Lesson Plans and other supporting resources.
